Biography

A powerful, skilful and athletic modern-day No.8, Matt signed his first professional contract in 2017 with Glasgow Warriors and won his first Scottish cap soon after during the 2018 summer tour.

After only 18 appearances for Glasgow warriors in his debut season, Matt's physical and abrasive style of play saw him named ‘Warriors most improved player’. He was also awarded the ‘Sir Willie Purves Quaich’ by Friends of Scottish Rugby, in recognition of his outstanding displays on the field.

A product of the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy as a stage 3 player, Matt’s ascent to one of Scotland’s most exciting back row players started early.  He represented Scotland at all age groups and starred in the 2017 World Rugby U20s Championship in Georgia, helping the Scotland team finish fifth.

His excellent form in the 2017/18 season was rewarded with an international call-up, making him Scotland's youngest ever number 8 to date. He is only the second Scotland forward to be capped as a teenager in 67 years and only the third teenager to be capped by Scotland in the pro era.

Matt is the younger brother of fellow #teamredsky member, Glasgow Warrior and Scotland team mate, Zander Fagerson. Together, they are the 48th pair of brothers to play for Scotland and the 22nd pair to play together in the same test match, against USA during Matt’s debut 2018 summer tour.
